Why Socratic?

As W.H. Auden says, the socratic method flows "from the observation that virtue cannot be taught, i.e. the truth cannot simply be stated by the teacher and learned by rote by the pupil because the results of learning cannot be separated from the process of inquiry which each individual must live through for himself."
